🔵 Understanding Different Oil Strainers for Ducati Bevel Engines
Category: Oil System
Video & Written Response
The oil pickup and strainer systems used in Ducati bevel engines vary significantly between round case, square case, and later Mille models. Understanding these differences is important when diagnosing oiling issues or considering service and modification options.
On round case and square case engines, the oil pickup and strainer is a removable insert system located on the side the crankcase. This design does allows the strainer to be serviced without splitting the crankcases(see you tube for how to video) , and it is a known maintenance point in these earlier bevel engines. These systems can be prone to issues depending on condition, positioning, and cleanliness of the pickup screen.
The Mille engine uses a different oil pickup design. A steel tube is cast directly into the crankcase, with the oil pickup positioned centrally rather than at one end of the crankcase as seen in earlier models. Because of this design, the Mille does not use the same removable strainer insert, and it does not share the same service characteristics as round or square case engines. At present, there is no direct replacement pickup screen available for the Mille from Vee Two, although development is underway. A separate video also covers how the oil strainer can be serviced on round and square case engines without splitting the crankcases.

Is it possible to change the pickup for the oil filter without splitting the crankcases? Do you make the pickup for the Mille?
