🔵 Have We Been Setting 750 Sport Valves Wrong? + Best Oil for Bevels

Category: Valve Train / Oil

Video & Written Response

Valve clearance settings on the Ducati 750 Sport springer head are often debated, with different manuals and sources quoting slightly different specifications. However, valve lash is not only about ensuring there is clearance to prevent valve damage. It also has a direct influence on cam timing, including opening point, closing point, and effective valve lift. Even very small changes in tappet settings can alter how the cam behaves in the engine.

Factory specifications have also changed over time, which is why different figures appear in different manuals. In practice, tighter clearances can result in a quieter engine and altered valve events. Wear in components such as rocker pins and bushes also plays a role, as these parts are not perfectly concentric and will wear unevenly over time, causing the effective tappet setting to continually change.

The second part of the discussion is the long-standing oil debate in bevel-drive Ducati engines. Oil is not only a lubricant but also a heat transfer medium, carrying heat away from internal components and into the fins where it can be dissipated. Thinner multigrade oils generally move and shed heat more effectively than straight-weight oils. While earlier factory manuals specified straight 50 weight oil, later guidance shifted toward multigrade oils as understanding improved. In addition, because bevel engines share oil between the engine and gearbox, the oil must also handle extreme pressure gear loads. A modern 20W-30 or 20W-50 oil with appropriate EP additives is often considered a balanced choice, offering reduced drag, improved heat transfer, and better overall performance across engine, gearbox, and camshaft components.

Original Question

Oliver Corcoran

750 Sport Springer head valve lash. Some sources say .1 for both, other sources say .1 and .15. Which is correct?

And of course the great oil debate. I run Motul 3000 20/50 in all my bevels. What say you?
