🔵 1976 Ducati 750SS False Neutrals When Downshifting – What’s Causing It?

Video & Written Response
False neutrals when downshifting on a Ducati 750SS, particularly when dropping from 4th to 3rd after selecting 5th gear, are more likely related to the external selector mechanism rather than internal gearbox damage. In many cases, the issue sits in the selector box and the linkage between the gear lever and the internal selection mechanism, rather than the gear clusters themselves.
The fact that the problem only presents after engaging 5th gear is an important diagnostic clue. This pattern often points toward a selector box issue, such as incorrect shimming, wear, or partial engagement within the shifting mechanism. Because the selector assembly is a more complex and sensitive system, small deviations in setup can result in inconsistent gear engagement under certain load or shift sequences.
In cases like this, the issue typically requires direct mechanical inspection and adjustment rather than general running-in or oil changes. It is recommended that the selector mechanism be checked and, if necessary, referred to a specialist such as Vee Two for further diagnosis and correction. This type of fault is often subtle and benefits from experienced hands rather than general adjustment.

Hi, I recently recommissioned (not restored) a 1976 750SS which had sat idle for 20-odd years. Refreshed the paint, exhaust, brakes and lines, rewired and a Sachse ignition. A bevel specialist in Victoria got it running sweetly and it’s a 2 kick start - wonderful!
I know the original owner well and the bike was a daily commuter for the last couple of years but had no issues with the gearbox.
I am finding false neutrals trying to come down from 4th to 3rd - like no resistance at all to the foot. Also found that if I give the throttle an extra blip, the resistance returns and I can change down.
This only happens if I get up into 5th gear and start coming down through the gears. If I only go to 4th gear and down - never a problem.
The bike is still on its first new oil change (300 km) and I am hoping it might disappear at the next oil change to get rid of settled gunk at 500 km. Any thoughts?
